AWIMA Celebrates Day of the Seafarer 2025 and Promotes Women’s Empowerment at Sea
Wednesday, 25 June 2025
On the occasion of the Day of the Seafarer, celebrated annually on 25 June, the Arab Women in Maritime Association (AWIMA) shared a commemorative post on its official platforms as a gesture of appreciation for seafarers worldwide and to highlight the importance of empowering women in the maritime sector.
The Day of the Seafarer, established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2010, recognizes the vital role of seafarers as the backbone of global trade, with over 80% of world trade carried by sea.
In this context, AWIMA emphasized that women seafarers are increasingly becoming key contributors to the maritime industry, demonstrating resilience not only against the challenges of the sea but also against social and cultural barriers.
The Association highlighted that empowering women in maritime is essential for achieving sustainable development, supported by global initiatives such as the IMO’s Women in Maritime Programme, alongside regional efforts led by AWIMA to enhance women’s participation.
This year’s celebration is held under the theme:
⚓ “My Harassment-Free Ship”
A strong call to ensure a safe, respectful, and inclusive working environment for all seafarers—especially women—while upholding dignity and equality at sea.
AWIMA reaffirmed that this day is not only about recognition but also about advocating for the protection of seafarers’ rights, improving working conditions, and promoting gender equality across the maritime industry.
